Soon the clocks turn back an hour.
So do we.
Honoring Transitions
Sankofa, the bird that turns its head to retrieve the egg it left behind, teaches that there is no shame in going back for what you forgot. You cannot carry a thing forward until you have returned to fetch it. On November 1 the clocks fall back an hour, and we are spending that hour the Sankofa way: looking back at what this first academic quarter built, so we can carry it through the rest of the year.
The first academic quarter is nearly behind us, and it moved fast. Here is the look back: the Awards that closed last year, the summer we spent building, and the September we spent in schools. Then the look ahead: services your site can bring in, playbooks, gear, and kits you can order, Brazil next July, and the Summit in January. Every piece connects to one framework, Interventology™: prevent, interrupt, intervene, and cultivate brilliance.

Looking back
From the Awards in May to the PD we led in September.
Hundreds of scholars, one stage
The 22nd Annual Student Achievement & Excellence Awards filled Chabot College on May 31. That is over two decades of honoring Black excellence, with thousands of scholars recognized since 2004. Academic Excellence. Academic Potential. Cultural Leadership. The Arts. Every one of them called by name.

An awards ceremony is a transition ritual: it names what a student did and marks where they are going. We help sites and communities design and run their own. Talk to us about yours
STEP UP! Summer Experience
STEP UP! Summer Experience ran June 15–18 at Rosa Parks Elementary with Healthy Black Families, Berkeley Unified, and AAREA. Four days on Freedom, Belonging, Stewardship, and Legacy, built around one question: how do we learn from the past so we can create a more just future? It was Sankofa in a room full of elementary students getting ready for their next step.
Where STEP UP! comes from. STEP UP! Academy carries the lineage of the award-winning Investing in Innovation (i3) STEM STEPS program. It has grown into a research-based academic intervention and enrichment resource, and it is part of the Interventology™ framework.

And this fall, on campus.
The work did not stop when summer did. This fall, scholars are building community, making art, and learning together on their own campuses. Want a program like this at your school? Our playbooks and 30+ years of expert program development help your team build and run its own.

Back in the building
All summer we ran professional learning with teachers and site teams: hands in the work, not sitting through slides. In September we took it into schools. Whole staffs worked side by side, sorting ideas on cards, looking hard at what they already know about their students, and working through The Roots Are Already Here, a session that uses the baobab as its method.

September 2026. Whole staffs, one room, real work: cards on the table, data on the screen, and The Roots Are Already Here in hand.

What your site can bring in, order, and plan for this year.
Interventology™ Services
You can have all of it. The question is the order. Your team is already working hard on programs, supports, professional learning, and data systems. We help school leaders work out what needs attention first, match the right response to the real need, and build systems the staff can sustain.
An Interventologist is someone trained to find out what is actually producing an outcome before deciding what to do about it, and then to build the response with the people who will run it.
Diagnosis before prescription. Built with your team. Designed to sustain.
Systemic intervention design
Priorities, data, routines, and the conditions producing your outcomes.
Transitions
5→6, 8→9, and 12→next, built as intervention.
Professional learning
Cycles with rehearsal and evidence, so practice keeps changing long after the PD day.
Leadership & coaching
Thinking partners for the calls only you can make.

A door for single schools
For more than thirty years this work came through districts, which meant waiting on a cycle that moves once a year. Now a single site can bring us in directly: a principal, an AP, or a counseling lead, without a districtwide decision. Districtwide and multi-site partnerships continue, and are scoped separately.
Start with one hour.
Bring us what you are seeing. We will listen, ask the diagnostic questions, and help you clarify where we would look first. You will leave with a one-page written summary of what we heard and the priorities worth examining next. It is yours whether or not anything follows.
Ready to go deeper? Diagnosis begins at $2,500. Design & Build, professional learning, coaching, and full-year partnerships are scoped to your site.
Every school’s conditions are different, so nothing here is a template. We diagnose with your team, in your building, using your data. Book a free hour
A full issue on Interventology™
STEP UP! Academy, Thrive@Home, the Transitions Playbooks, our professional learning: it all connects to one framework. Our next issue goes inside it, ahead of the Interventology™ Field Guide launch in January.
The Transitions Playbooks
Everything we know about the moments students move up, written down so a first-time coordinator can run it. One master template plus event-specific editions: a Black-to-School playbook, and Transition Fair playbooks for both 5th→6th and 8th→9th. Same structure every time, local content every time.

We can adapt any playbook to your site (your calendar, your feeder pattern, your families) and train your team to run it without us. Ask about playbooks
Cultivate Brilliance

Because what we say to students, they end up saying to themselves.
Cultivate Brilliance is our line of wearables and learning kits: language of possibility that students, families, and staff can carry. Buy one for yourself, or outfit a whole team for the year.

STEAM Kits
Order by November 6 for winter break.
Real tools, not worksheets. Each kit turns a child into a scientist for the week, with a Scientific Method Notebook to record every question, hypothesis, and result, and Innovator Challenge Cards that pair a real scientist’s story with a hands-on mission.
Same lineage, at the kitchen table. Like STEP UP! Academy, Thrive@Home grows out of the award-winning i3 STEM STEPS program. Each kit is a research-based enrichment and intervention resource within the Interventology™ framework, built so learning keeps going at home.

The Radio Kit. A voltage detector to find where electricity lives, a mini tape measure, and a battery holder for building simple circuits, plus permission to fail forward. Scholars build in the footsteps of Black inventors like Granville T. Woods and Lewis Latimer, whose work in electricity and communication helped power the modern world.

The Garden Lab. A see-through root viewer to watch what happens underground, real non-GMO okra seeds, and a week of walking in George Washington Carver’s footsteps. It grows indoors, so a sunny windowsill is all it needs.
For classrooms and sites sending scholars home over the break with something worth opening. Ordered by the set, bulk pricing available.
For families who want the learning to keep going at the kitchen table. One kit, one scholar, no prep required.
Kits are packed to order. Orders close November 6.
Sending a whole class or site home with kits? The School Edition is ordered by the set, with bulk pricing. Ask about School Edition pricing
AAREA Global Diaspora Study Tours
Music, Memory, and the African Diaspora
July 17 – August 1, 2027
16 days · Bahia (Salvador and the Recôncavo) · Rio de Janeiro · 10–16 travelers

Brazil received more enslaved Africans than any other country in the Americas, and Bahia sits at the heart of that history. African traditions still shape its music, faith, food, language, and resistance. We will study survival, adaptation, and cultural continuity on the ground, in relationship and not as spectators.
Faculty resident: Professor Nzingha Dugas, Chair of Black Studies at Contra Costa College and a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil.

Eighteen years of the Summit

For eighteen consecutive years, educators have gathered with us for a day of practice that travels home. This year the whole Summit is focused on the moments students move up, and what it takes to carry Black students through them well.
